Trunk Show February 7, 2009

Designer Sara Bradstreet will be showcasing her latest jewelry collection at the Ann Arbor Art Center on Saturday, February 7, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. A self-proclaimed scavenger, Sara combs the shelves of thrift shops, junk stores, flea markets and garage sales in search of discarded old jewelry. She then drills, solders and cobbles together bits and baubles to produce striking, modern compilations of wearable art.

“It is important to me to create a body of work that voices the urgency to salvage and preserve bits of history as decadent time capsules. In a world that is tarnished with waste and debris, how artfully green it can be to salvage someone’s trash and transform it into treasure.”

The brashness of an 80s gold chain might be softened with an overlay of enameled flowers from the 1950s; crystal brooches from a grandmother's trinket box are emboldened by the addition of gold geometrics and a deliberately chunky clasp. These eclectic combinations both pay homage to the past and transcend its aesthetic boundaries. They provoke conversation, showcase unique styles, and tell their own stories.

All jewelry in the Ann Arbor Art Center’s Gallery Shop will be 20% off during the event. The Ann Arbor Art Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging the community in the education, exhibition, and exploration of the visual arts. In 2009, the Art Center is celebrating 100 years of being the “place where creativity and community meet.”

Red October

Break out your Bling with an ostentatious display of jewelery..thank you hip hop for giving life to a word that meant nothing before gold chains and diamond embellished pendants came back into style. Jewelry is said to define one's status..what does your jewelry say about you?

There is no need for real gold and diamonds on Broad Street.

I've always believed in the saying act local, think global. My creative outlet had to reflect and nurture my desire to make the world a cleaner place, less mass produced items, less mining of precious metals and stones, more beauty in nature, reincarnation of old things, a little less noise.
